Chic modern farmhouse style in Mill Valley, California

A farmhouse style residence has been given a modern renovation by , in collaboration with designer , located in Mill Valley, California. The interiors of this home had an awkward configuration that needed to be re-opmized to meet the lifestyle needs of a young family. The homeowners enjoy spending time outdoors, so the need layout required the bedrooms to be shifted to the upper level. The main living spaces were re-configured to the ground level, while a new double-height wing was added to the home, consisting of a living/dining area and a kitchen.

The clients are originally from the East Coast, wishing for their new design to take on a “Connecticut farmhouse feel”. The new living/dining room wing reflects a New England country style offering a barn-like aesthetic with exposed wood beams and a relaxed elegance. Nuances of Colonial style interiors can be seen in the paneling and pilasters in the fireplace surround. A palette of natural, earthy colors was used throughout the interiors to help deepen the connection between indoors and out.

On the upstairs level of this Mill Valley home, a beautiful master bedroom suite feels like a treehouse sanctuary. This space features several windows and French doors that spills out onto a secluded balcony. Bursts of color and pattern were experimented with throughout the upper level, adding personality and style. The barn aesthetic is reflected in the master bathroom with a sliding door and custom designed vanity. The vanity inspires equestrian traditions with leather drawer pulls and a diamond motif on the side.

A whimsical touch was added outside, a lush green roof that divides the balcony of the master suite from the balcony off the children’s bedroom. This was another way for the architects to connect the outdoors with the indoors.

What We Love: This Mill Valley home does a wonderful job of embracing the outdoors and using mostly natural material elements throughout. Reflecting a New England country style with raw wood beams and beautiful panelling, there is so much to love about this family home. The new layout is open and spacious with a master bedroom suite that offers its homeowners a relaxing oasis. How about you, what is your favorite feature of this home?

Beautiful! I’m curious of what white paint color was used for the exterior…and also the white interior trim/ceilings/walls. The paint choices and use of natural elements are gorgeous and inviting.
