Breathtaking mountain modern home deep in the Montana forest

This mountain modern home was designed by  in collaboration with , located in the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club, Big Sky, Montana. This home portrays a cozy, intimate atmosphere that has a strong connection to its rugged surroundings. The spaces have an open and airy feel with a layering of light textures, a mix of rustic and modern with stylish touches throughout.

The overall aesthetic draws upon the American Farmhouse—referencing historical styles while preserving details from the past; integrating clean lines and modern materials. According to the architects, the architectural design was based on several factors: site orientation to maximize views and connection to seasonal water elements, glass cubes, simplistic form and material palette, and steel accents with structure and cladding.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the great rooms helps to frame views of the natural surroundings, which includes the Spanish Peaks. The great room features a striking ‘glass cube effect’, with its gabled roof form and square shape, along with expansive walls of glass and soaring ceilings. The thin-frame, aluminum clad windows brings a contemporary aesthetic to the space, not to mention their high thermal performance.

Playing further on the simplicity of American Farmhouse aesthetic is the over-sized, front entry pivot door. You are immediately welcomed by a radiating warmth from the use of materials, a mix of timbers and stone. Interior design studio, Peace Design, infused the spaces with a soft color palette throughout the interiors. This is reflected in the linens, fabrics, woods and stone. These soft colors allowed the stone, steel, and walnut casework to be showcased.

What We Love: This modern mountain home displays creativity throughout, with its fine craftsmanship, custom stone and steel beams. Expansive windows helps to blur the boundaries between indoors and out, connecting you with the surrounding forest. The great room is our favorite space, with its vaulted wood and steel beamed ceiling and stone clad fireplace… not to mention the windows framing the views of nature! The space is open and airy yet cozy and intimate, completely breathtaking… Readers, please share your overall thoughts on the design of this mountain retreat in the comments below.
