Charming Mediterranean style home with heritage in Northern California

This Mediterranean style home was designed by , located in Hillsborough, a town in San Mateo County, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Modernizing a home with a distinctive traditional mediterranean style can be a challenge, but when a young couple purchased this 1920s home that needed an overhaul, they knew Jute would be up for the challenge. The design team invigorated the space with a new energy, while preserving the original charm.

The home is located in an area that was once a summer retreat for urban city dwellers to escape San Francisco’s rampant fog. The neighborhood was full of small cottages that needed modern love. The clients wished to retain the quirky, authentic aspects of the home, including the low ceilings that made the spaces feel intimate—along with the beams and arched windows. It was very important to them that the designers retain the cottage atmosphere, as well as the original parts of the home.

What We Love: This Mediterranean style home retains its charm, while modernizing the interiors, where everything is clean and efficient. Authentic Spanish design details can be seen throughout the light-filled interiors, from the archways to the terra-cotta elements and custom woodwork. While this home is expansive, it feels intimate and cozy thanks to the handcrafted, customized details… Readers, what are your overall thoughts on the style and preservation details of this home?
