Modern lake house getaway on forested landscape in northern Minnesota

was commissioned to create this modern lake house getaway that reflects a crisp, clean aesthetic in Hubbard, Minnesota. A young and active couple with an appreciation for modern Scandinavian architecture wanted to have a vacation retreat surrounded by woods. The couple purchased parcel on their dad’s property up North, building a home that is not your typical lake house cabin.

Encompassing 4,500 square feet of living space, the layout was designed in the form of an H-shape. With the private bedroom zones separated by a glass central core — which houses the dining area — from the public zones. The public living spaces stretches out towards the lake beyond, contouring the landscape and blurring lines between the built and natural environments. Spacious living areas feature expansive walls of glass to invite natural light and frame intimate lake views through the embankment.

With a subtle darkened exterior material palate, this home blends into the forested landscape, while white oak finishes infuses warmth into the minimal and crisp interior. This enables the surrounding natural environment to be the highlight.

What We Love: This modern lake house getaway offers an active family lifestyle, complimented by a design that is uncluttered, open and low-maintenance. This is a retreat where one can relax, unwind and be as much a part of the landscape as possible. With the separate public and private zones in this dwelling, inhabitants can have plenty of fun while also being able to find reprieve… Readers, we would love to hear your thoughts on the design of this home. Are there any details in the design that you would have liked to have seen done differently? Tell us in the Comments!

Above: A screened-in porch opposite the dining area features a NanaWall, a large panel sliding glass wall system. The flooring is rift-cut oak. Infrared heaters integrated into the ceiling keeps the porch warm during the cooler months.

Above: In the double-volume living room, a floor-to-ceiling concrete-block fireplace creates a dramatic focal point.

Above: In the dining area, concrete flooring provides a durable finish for an active family lifestyle. Illuminating the  dining table and chairs is the 8-globe branching bubble chandelier by Lindsey Adelman.

Above: A transparent core features an operable glass wall that opens to combine the dining and private lounge. This enables a sheltered connection to the forest and lake beyond. The bedroom zones are partially embedded into the landscape, set away from the public spaces. This helps to protect the private sleeping quarters from the active lifestyle surrounding it.

Above: In the powder bathroom, a wall of black-coated Douglas fir creates a moody atmosphere. Bringing light into the space is an overhead skylight and a floating vanity composed of rift-sawn white oak.
