This gorgeous French farmhouse style home was designed by , located in the upscale Silverleaf community of Scottsdale, Arizona. The design of this home encourages family connections while providing private spaces for each family member. Based upon simple rural Mediterranean farmhouse architecture, the various pieces of the home surround a central courtyard, creating a private compound with an authentic scale. Indoor/outdoor connections are emphasized, with numerous exterior covered living spaces and fireplaces.

The interiors were designed by , using antique building materials set against modern and contemporary interior features, working together to create a relaxed and sophisticated dwelling. The material language of this home is decidedly livable and relaxed.

Project Team: Architect: OZ Architects / Interior Design: David Michael Miller Associates / Landscape: Siteworks, LLC / Builder: Linthicum Custom Builders

The contrasts of materiality and the reinterpretations of traditional millwork and furnishings styles are used in a deliberate way, to affect an interior that is new and old simultaneously. Materials were chosen that have a patina and can age well, while the spaces are purposefully intimate, comfortable and human scaled. The plan avoids large connected rooms, instead incorporating rooms for a specific purpose such as the kitchen which features a cooking fireplace and farm table at the center. A private enclosed swimming grotto can be accessed from both the pool and the master shower.

Above: The table in the kitchen is an antique draper’s table from France, built in oak — the designer sourced it from a dealer in Los Angeles. The pottery on the mantel is 17th and 18th century, and is of Spanish origin. The flooring is a mix of brushed petite granite and french limestone. The finish for both materials are intentionally worn and matte, while the edges are saw cut. This creates an overall aesthetic that is a mix of modern and old world.

Above: The bar stools are inexpensive wood stools that were made in black lacquer. The designer had them stripped and then the project’s finisher did a distressed aged finish to them, to the make the cheap bar stools look like something different.

Above: The coffee table was found in Los Angeles. It was modified by bleaching it. The built-in day beds were custom fabricated by the project’s trim carpenter. The platforms were made from left over reclaimed lumber at the site. A local upholsterer made the old school button tufted, hand ticked cushions. It is a coarse woven linen fabric.  The light fixture is silver nickel plated and is from Chameleon Lighting.
